Each age group is determined by the 'school year'.  The age of the child is taken as at 1st September.  For instance, if your child is 8 on 1st September they would play in the Under 8s (Year 3) age group.  If the child is 8 on 31st August they would play in the Under 9s (Year 4) age group.
